The Top 20 Clean Romance Movies Of All Time

I'm really picky when it comes to romantic movies.

I prefer them clean and it's really hard to find those kind of romance movies these days.

Nowadays, romantic movies are chock full of butts, boobs, and beds.

Just sayin'.

I was bored one day and decided to google the top romance movies of all time.

You have got to be kidding me.

One list had Brokeback Mountain on it.

Pulease.

I was, in fact, so disgusted by all of the lists that I came across that I decided to make my own. I decided to call it The Top 16 Clean Romance Movies of All Time, well, because I couldn't think of anymore to make it an even top 20.

Now, my list might be different from most people.

I said I was picky.

First, I don't like b***** women. That scratches out a whole pile of popular movies. One of them being Gone With The Wind. Does anyone besides me want to smack that woman?

Second, I don't like it when the couple end up in bed together. Uh, I don't really need to know, thankyouverymuch.

Third, in many movies these days, the main characters have gay friends. Uh, I don't think so.

So, this list is going to be of the movies that are MY favorite and happen to be clean enough for me which also means there may be some kissing in these.

You have been warned.

So, here goes in no particular order:

Roman Holiday- Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck

The Lake House- Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves

Sleepless in Seattle- Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan

Casablanca- Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman- a classic!

While You Were Sleeping- Sandra Bullock and Bill Pullman

You've Got Mail- Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan

Becoming Jane- Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy

Sense & Sensibility- Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson- superb acting

Pride and Prejudice- Colin Firth- the one with Keira Knightley is nice because the acting by the guy was really good, but Keira rubs me the wrong way- she comes across as too mean.

My Fair Lady- Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn- the screenplay is a riot. It would be considered politically incorrect these days. That's probably one of the reasons why I like it so much. So funny.

Always- Holly Hunter

Ever After- Drew Barrymore- English accents in France. Yeah, I don't get it, either, but it is a clean romance at least.

Wuthering Heights- Ralph Fiennes and Juliet Binoche- the musical score is beautiful.

Jane Eyre- William Hurt- the best version I've seen.

Gigi- Leslie Caron- I always end up speaking in a French accent after watching this movie. It's so fun.

Bringing Up Baby- Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant- the relationship of the characters smacks of mine and Doc's. I always laugh my head off. A true romantic comedy. In fact, the best.

So, there you have it, people. Now, it's time to order/buy that special DVD, pop some popcorn, grab your favorite blanket along with your guy, and settle in for some mindless entertainment.....unless he's like my guy.

You know.

The kind of guy who makes comments throughout the movie like, "Well, isn't that nice?" or "Kissy, kissy, kissy," or "Pulease," or...well, you get the drift.

Then comes the time when you must kick out said guy and be content with watching the movie by yourself.

Because then you'll get some peace and quiet.

So, what's your favorite?

UPDATE: ***People! How could I forget The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, and The Princess Bride?! That takes it to 19, so in order to make it an even 20, I'll put in Striving's suggestion Bed of Roses. Thanks! So, the title is now The Top 20!

I'm with you on Bringing Up Baby. Brilliant! I also really liked Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but it seems like there is a less-than clean love scene in it. It's been a while since I've seen it so I don't remember exactly.

From your list I LOVE Ever After. Great movie. And it has been a while since I have seen it, but Bed of Roses, I dont remember boobs and butts scenes, but it is a good movie. Thanks for the tip I am going to have to watch Bringing up baby. Now I need to go read the rest of your blogs, I have not been here in a LLLOOONNNGGG time.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon would be under my list of action/adventure/martial arts. And I loved it, too.

I did like Bed of Roses. I just had a hard time connecting with the female character. She was so driven towards her career that I found it hard to relate. I did love the male character a lot, though. It's a sweet movie.

Oh, and there is a huge sex scene in Crouching Tiger, so I had to close my eyes and say, "Eeuu!" until it was over. :)

Yeah. I remember fast forwarding so I'm not sure how severe it was since I've never actually seen the scene. I still contend it's a love story, though. It has the added benefit of being exciting and interesting enough to keep the husband's ruinous comments at bay.
To fit the clean category, I always loved the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films, too. What about Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy? They are hilariously brilliant, too.

There is definitely a love story in it. One of my favorite movies.

There are lots of classics that are really good, but I haven't watched any Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy movies. I'll have to remedy that. :)

I'm a huge fan of clean romance movies too, which are so hard to find! The Mask of Zorro, even though probably categorized as action/adventure, had a nice romance in it. Here are some of my other favorites: Fireproof, Return to Me, Kate & Leopold, A Walk to Remember, Twilight. If you liked The Lake House, I recommend seeing Il Mare, the Korean film on which it was based. I actually liked Il Mare a lot better. I also think the new Sense & Sensibility (BBC 2008) is really good.

How could I forget those movies?! I love those movies!! I will have to definitely check out Il Mare and the new Sense & Sensibility. Thanks so much!

Just a little word of warning: the first scene in the new S&S is sensual (it's Willoughby and Brandon's ward), although it doesn't show anything really bad.

The very end of Il Mare wasn't great, IMO--I just imagined the Lake House ending tacked onto it instead. LOL!

I also remembered another movie I like: While You Were Sleeping.

I love your list. You have a great selection. :) I also like the dramatized Jane Austin books: Persuasion (with Amanda Root) and Sense & Sensibility (with Emma Thompson). Another good Jane Eyre is the one with Timothy Dalton. My husband is a rare find. He sat through all three hours of Jane Eyre with me without much comment at all. In fact, he really loved one particular scene.

You know, my husband likes the Timothy Dalton version as well! He even likes a particular scene, too. He has even admitted that he likes Sense & Sensibility with Emma Thompson. He thought it had great acting. Wonders never cease. :)

50 First Dates is one of the least clean movies I know. Sure, the romance between Adam and Drew's characters is sweet and clean, but every other part of the movie is extremely vulgar. I agree with your Top 16 + Princess Bride.

I love the Enchanted Cottage from 1945, and A Patch of Blue from1965.

I recently saw The Magic of Ordinary Days with Keri Russell, a Hallmark Hall of Fame. The Inheritance with Meridith Baxter Birney is good too. No skin in either; and good moral values in both.

Dignified Woman

They instructed me to make sure I have a full bladder on arriving for my ultrasound. Ha. I almost laughed in their faces. Pregnant me plus a full bladder equals a disaster. On my son's birthday back in March, I had to drive all the kids home afterward. I had drunk a lot of water and couldn't believe I had forgotten what happens to me when I drink too much water with no bathroom nearby when I'm pregnant. I counted the minutes till I got home all the while breaking the law and speeding trying to keep in mind not to drive too recklessly screaming at the poky people in front of me. It brought to mind the very first time I experienced a full bladder as a pregnant woman. It was my first baby and my husband was in the Air Force. So, when we had an ultrasound we went to the Academy in Colorado Springs. They told me to drink an astronomical amount of water before I came. I did so and then we started out for the half hour drive to the hospital. By the time we were on the

Candy Stash

As I bite into a luscious Reese's peanut butter cup, I have one thought in my mind. Thank you, Lord, that none of my children have food allergies. Otherwise, I would not be able to steal some of the candy bars from their Halloween candy stash. I would normally consider myself a meat and potatoes kind of gal. I would rather eat roast and mashed potatoes than candy any day. There comes a time, though, in every woman's life when eating chocolate becomes a must. Yesterday, I grabbed the pumpkin full of candy, locked the bathroom door, filled the tub with hot water, and luxuriated in a chocolate fest. It had to be done. May I say that Snickers is the best candy bar ever? Of course, Reese's comes in a very close second. Peanut butter and chocolate were made for each other. I was a bit disappointed to see no Butterfinger bars at all. What's up with that? Aidan probably noticed the less than full pumpkin because he brought me an empty one and told me that we need
