Grocery Budget

I'm usually the one going over to Rocks In My Dryer to get as many tips as I can cram into my brain, but today I actually have one that many of you probably already know about. Since I didn't know about this particular tip, I thought I'd share for the fun of it. A couple weeks ago, I realized that there HAS to be a way to get our grocery bill down to a reasonable amount. We have five little ones at home, but they don't even eat that much and are even downright picky at times. I had been trying to save money at the grocery store as well as I knew how, but I knew there had to be something that I could do even more. So, I looked up on the internet for some frugal recipes that didn't taste like cardboard and hit the jackpot. I called my oh-so-wise mother telling her about my find. My mother raised four children on a budget, so she is full of great ideas on how to save money. So, she told me about this particular tip that I'm going to share with the world. She told me to bypass the produce section in the wintertime. WHAT? What about my grapes or clementines? What about my potatoes? What about my TOMATOES? I can't live without my tomatoes! I have to have tomatoes on my tacos! Then she told me to use canned tomatoes. She said to drain a can of diced tomatoes really well and serve them up with my tacos. I thought, "I could do that." Besides, I'm the only one in my family who likes them anyway. I could also find canned fruit and be perfectly happy with that. Potatoes? Use the boxed potato flakes and make them your own way to be perfectly yummy. I went to the store with my list in hand and went to work. When I got to the cash register, I stood there with bated breath to see how I did. The woman behind the counter probably thought I was a little batty when I smiled with glee and did a jig when she told me how much I owed. I still had to buy milk (I CANNOT go without that), but I saved a bundle. I don't know why I didn't think to just pass the produce section before, but it is a great way to save money. Thanks, Mom! I do the same, but do buy root vegetables (potatoes, carrots) even in the winter. I just don't like the taste of a tomato flow in in from South America or an apple that has sat in storage for 5 months.

Good idea! I wonder if you can get "organic" canned stuff like that? We are trying to buy things with less preservatives and chemical spray residues...hmm now you got me thinking!

I'm so glad you posted this because I just figured it out a couple of weeks ago...And yes, Ashley, they have organic canned everything! The best part for me is that my 10 month old can easily "chew" the canned fruits and veggies, plus there's no prep work. Yay!

I can't believe this didn't occur to me yesterday when I about fainted buying produce. Everything was so expensive. Thanks, I'll definitely try this next time.

Don't forget about the frozen section too - we get most of our veggies there because I think they taste better than canned, and often they're just as inexpensive (at least at our WalMart). I buy huge bags of frozen blueberries and strawberries which we use for breakfast or dessert smoothies and to mix with plain or vanilla yogurt from big tubs.

That's an awesome idea, Elyssa! I also like the frozen food section for veggies. Spinach is a favorite of mine because I can hide it in my manicotti. The boys think it's just herbs. Ha. I really like the fruit smoothie idea. Thanks.

The Top 20 Clean Romance Movies Of All Time

I'm really picky when it comes to romantic movies. I prefer them clean and it's really hard to find those kind of romance movies these days. Nowadays, romantic movies are chock full of butts, boobs, and beds. Just sayin'. I was bored one day and decided to google the top romance movies of all time. You have got to be kidding me. One list had Brokeback Mountain on it. Pulease. I was, in fact, so disgusted by all of the lists that I came across that I decided to make my own. I decided to call it The Top 16 Clean Romance Movies of All Time, well, because I couldn't think of anymore to make it an even top 20. Now, my list might be different from most people. I said I was picky. First, I don't like b***** women. That scratches out a whole pile of popular movies. One of them being Gone With The Wind. Does anyone besides me want to smack that woman? Second, I don't like it when the couple end up in bed together. Uh, I don't really need to know, thankyouverymuch. Th...

Pregnant vs. Just Plain Fat

Saturday, I had the opportunity to go to a Pampered Chef party at a friend's house. I was feeling particularly bubbly that day and it must have showed. As everyone tells me to say hi to my boys for them, the consultant asks, "How many boys do you have?" I said, "Four," and she asked, "And one on the way?" I gave her a blank stare. How in the world did she guess? I am only about a month along. As everyone congratulates me, I am still in shock. I hadn't planned on anyone knowing for at least two more months. As I'm driving home, I realize that it could have gone badly. What if I hadn't been pregnant? That led to more thinking and here's how it went: Those of you who don't even start showing until your fourth month- I hate you. Those of you who don't get the kind of morning sickness that lasts all day every day for four months- I hate you. Those of you who don't go through a nightmare of pain without medication during labor- I ...

"It's On My List"

In the Veggie Tales movie, Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, Larry the Cucumber's character is afraid of everything. He even has a list of things he will have nothing to do with because they scare him too much. If he came across something he was afraid of, Larry would say, "It's on my list." The boys watched this movie to death before we returned it. One night, I told Sleepy to go up to his room and change his shirt. We were going to the swimming pool for lessons and I wasn't about to let him go out in public with peanut butter all over himself. He complained that it was too dark upstairs. Now, you might wonder why he didn't just turn on the light. Well, Mommy Dearest has yet to replace the lighbulbs in the ceiling light, but that would require too much effort. I would have to go into the garage, find the ladder, find the lightbulbs, and trudge everything up the stairs and set to work. For something like that, I would need to do a breathing technique I ...
